The Mindful University Project is a campus-wide initiative offered through the UHS Health Promotion Office with a mission to empower our campus community to build a culture of mindful presence and compassion.

Creating a Flourishing Campus Culture

Grounded in evidence-based practices, our mindfulness programs are designed to promote mental well-being, build resilience, and create a supportive environment for growth and well-being 

Research underscores the transformative impact of mindfulness programs with supervised practice. According to the American Council on Education in 2023, mindfulness programs have the most consistent positive evidence on student mental health. These programs have been shown to: 

  • Enhance social-emotional skills such as coping, positive thinking, and emotional and stress management (Conley 2015; Astin 1997; Shapiro et al. 2008). 
  • Boost self-perceptions like self-esteem and self-actualization (Oman et al. 2008; Shapiro et al. 1998). 
  • Reduce emotional distress and mental health symptoms, including anxiety, depression, and burnout (Conley et al. 2013; Hofmann et al. 2010). 
  • Improve sleep quality, a critical factor for student success (Friedrich and Schlarb 2018; Greeson et al. 2014). 

By integrating mindfulness practices into campus life, the Mindful University Project creates opportunities for students to cultivate awareness, balance, and a sense of purpose. These skills not only enhance individual flourishing but also contribute to a more compassionate and connected community. 

Through workshops, guided practice sessions, and specialized training programs, we aim to equip students with tools to navigate challenges, embrace personal growth, and build a foundation for lifelong well-being.
